We're doing an inclining experiment in the river in front of our shop. This is one of the first dories that we built. It has a simple, workable arrangement of 2 thwarts and a watertight bow locker. The vertical grain fir floorboards are in sections which lift out. There is no need for cleats or chocks: just tie up to the through-bolted inwale.
The interior of this dory features a watertight bow locker, a forward thwart that can support a mast, and vertical grain Douglas fir floorboards. The floorboards are built in easily removable sections, one for each frame space. When you get back home from playing in your boat, it's a simple matter to lift these sections out into your driveway, hose them down, and hose out the clean boat interior. Large frame limbers allow the water to drain aft and out. The black object in the immediate foreground is a downrigger mount. Downriggers are very popular for salmon trolling in the Pacific Northwest.
This boat has been set up for salmon fishing with downriggers and electronics. The gray painted seat is a custom fish box. The transom hung outboard with splashwell frees up a lot of cockpit space.
There's enough space in the cabin for 1 or 2 sleepers, depending on how friendly they are.
Looking astern. This boat was a couple years old when these photos were taken. The unfinished fir floorboards have weathered to their natural appearance. I quite like it. The little seats on either side of the splashwell aren't very useful for seats, but they hide the batteries and give you a place to put your knee when fishing or working over the stern.
This is how the floorboards looked when they were new. This boat has a folding soft top. The companionway doors have been done as drop in sections in sailboat style.
A new boat, ready to ship. This one has the custom aluminum tanks that we are using now. A pair of rodholders are mounted in the gunwale.
Although all the photos of cabin boats on this page show boats with bright finished cockpits (usually Cetol), we have actually built more with painted cockpits.
